Denmark Currency - The Krone

Updated: Oct 5, 2022

The krone is the official currency of Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands, introduced on 1 January 1875. Both the ISO code "DKK" and currency sign "kr." are in common use; the former precedes the value, the latter in some contexts follows it. Kroner is the plural for krone. While it’s better to use Danish kroner, it’s possible to use euros and dollars when paying for high priced items such as hotel rooms.

US dollars are accepted for bigger purchases in the touristy areas of the capital Copenhagen but don’t expect to get a great exchange rate. You will get your change returned in Danish kroner, and also at a bad exchange rate.

The oldest Danish coins are the so-called korsmønter or “cross coins” minted by Harald Bluetooth in the late 10th century. Lund was the main minting place and one of Denmark’s most important cities in the Middle Ages, but in that era coins were also minted in places like Roskilde, Odense or Viborg.

The Scandinavian Monetary Union came to an end in 1914, when the gold standard was abandoned. Denmark, Sweden and Norway then decided to keep the name of their respective, now separated, currencies.

Denmark later returned to the gold standard in 1924 but left it permanently in 1931. Between 1940 and 1945, the krone was pegged to the German Reichsmark until the end of the German occupation.

Danish coins, in order to make them more easily managed by visually impaired people, are distinguished in color, diameter, weight, and the texture of the coin rims. The color variations roughly correspond to the old system of gold and silver coins – thus, higher-value coins are composed of an aluminum bronze that approximates a gold color, while lower value coins minted from a nickel alloy appear silver.
